I decided yesterday that I would get up and go and run the Nestle 5k.  I was contemplating on going and running a long run or to go and run a 5k.  I didn't run a mile this whole week, so I thought that it would be better if I ran a 5k and then gear up for next week.

Got to the race and had about 30 minutes to get ready.  I ran about .5 with Brandon G and then we headed to the start line.  I lined up with Pat and Darin, I normally finish right behind Darin so I asked him what his goal was and he said under 18:00.  I thought that I would maybe go out with him and see how things felt.  I went out woth theh lead pack and knew that there was going to be a good hill at about .65, so I slowed the pace a bit and made sure that I didn't burn out on that hill.

Mile 1 5:59 - Feeling good and dropping a lot of runners.  I had a guy with 26.2 shirt in front of me that I wanted to pass.  I was feeling good and was wondering if I wasn't going fast enough.

Mile 2 5:5:49 -  I was glad to finally see mile 2 come and go.  I caught 26.2 guy just pass this mile and was still feeling pretty good.  I knew that there was going to be a good down hill and I was ready for it.  I passed one more guy just before the hill.

Mile 3 5:31 -  Running down the short hill was great. But it didn't last long enough.  When I hit the bottom of the hill it was like my legs needed a jump start.  It took a little bit to get them moving fast again.  I only had about .5 left and knew that there would be some good loud music and people cheering when we finished around the track.  I had a good gap behind me and just a few guys in front of me.  I tried to close the gap on a young high school kid, but I waited a little to long and he finished right in front of me.

Mile .1 13.38 sec  Good kick at the end, I was so ready to be done.

We waited for the awards to be handed out.  They finally posted the results on the board and it had me 13th overall and then had nothing for my age?  I went and talked to the race director and told him that I beat the guy in my age division bt more than a minute.  He said just come up after and I will make sure that you get a plaque???  I said your not going to fix it?  He said no, we can just mail you one!  I didn't go and find him he came and talked to me and said, ok there was a mix up on our part.  I can see here that you really did take first, so what is your address and I will make sure that we get it changed on the web site and that we mail you a plaque.  I told him to keep the plaque that I didn't need it and that they need a better timing system.  I wasn't rude, just very bugged that he didn't take the time to fix it when he had plenty of time to do so.  Oh well maybe the kid that got the first place plaque had a bad week and needed it more than me, and that it ok by me.  It was a great day and I was extremely happy with th PR on the course, and glad that I got to hang out with some good people.  The weather was just perfect.

See a week off running does you good, I don't think I would have the same results. Great job Tyler!

Way to go! I hope they straightened out your time and placing. That stinks when that happens!

Great race Tyler! It stinks that you didn't get recognized at the awards for your 1st place finish. Keep that positive attitude!

One of the defining moments in my progression as a runner was when I realized that age division awards are meaningless and stopped racing for them. Indeed, whether you win one or not depends on way too many widely fluctuating random factors that have absolutely nothing to with your fitness. What merit is there in being the fastest in the 25-29 age division if you get beat by the winners in the 18 and under, 30-34, 35-39, and 40-44, top overall master, and the top three that were not eligible for the age division awards were all 25-29? And yet this happens quite often. One day you can win your age division with 21:00. Another day you will not get an award of any kind with 16:30. Same race, same level of competition, just some variation in age distributions.

Cash prizes are a quite a bit more predictable. A race director throws out a little bit of pocket change, and now you have a race. With as little as $100-$75-$50 if you won cash, it means most likely you cracked 16:00. So it means something, finally. And as a bonus it is a whole lot easier to store than trophies, medals, and plaques.

Or if you cannot get cash, you can say I was 2:00 away from cash, 1:00 away from cash, 30 seconds, I could see the money in front of me, but it ran away, and then you get better and it does not run away, you are now the money that runs away from somebody else.

Awesome race Tyler. I can't even imagine running that fast.
